Protective Reefs

LICengineering has performed a project including possibilities for placing reefs protecting the shallow water bridge piers of the East Road Bridge against ship impact.

LICengineering has performed a project including different construction alternatives for submerged reefs as a part of the protection against ship impact on the East Bridge over The Great Belt.

The different construction alternatives were presented with the cast estimates, hydraulic effects and reefs in conjunction with anchor piers. From a hydraulic point of view the reefs might be acceptable if the angle with the current is in the order of 10 degrees or less. The exact loss of the flow crossing under an angle with such a reef should be tested out with a very simple model test in a flume, which were performed during this project.
